International Archives Day 9/06/2015: the Labour and Social Security Inspectorate in the Central Archive

The current Labour and Social Security Inspectorate is a fundamental part of the Ministry of Employment and Social Economy, even prior to the creation of the Department as the Ministry of Labour in 1920. The Inspection was born in 1906 as a service of the Institute of Social Reforms:

Foreseen by the Regulations of the Institute as a competence of the Second Technical - Administrative Section, the organization of the Inspection Service will become effective from the year 1906. by Royal Decree of 1 March 1906 the Regulations for the Labour Inspection Service are approved. Once the regional inspectors have been appointed and the regulations governing the Inspectorate have been supplemented by additional provisions to the Regulations, the inspection service will be operational from April 1907 onwards. (Juan Ignacio Palacio Morena, The Institutionalization of Social Reform in Spain (1883-1924): the Commission and the Institute of Social Reforms. Madrid; Ministry of Labour and Social Security, 1988).

The Inspectorate therefore has more than a hundred years of history as a public service for monitoring and supervising compliance with social standards (Act 42/1997 of 14 November 1997, Ordinator of the Labour and Social Security Inspectorate, article 1.2). Now, on the eve of a new organizational evolution of the Inspection, announced by the presentation of the Draft Law Ordering the Labour and Social Security Inspection System. The Department’s Central Archive wanted to dedicate the edition of International Archives Day 2015 to the Inspection, showing a small selection of its documents from the founding period, and which show the continuity in time of the inspection functions in defense of the laws and the social and labor rights of workers.

The Central Archive not only guards these already historic documents, but also the most recent documents that support the inspection actions and the rights they protect, regularly transferred by the central services of the Inspectorate. In addition, the Central Archive collaborates with the Inspectorate in the regulation of the document management of its archives, for example in relation to documents and documents.
